Comatose Tour (Skillet/Thousand Foot Krutch/Decyfer Down)

April 8, 2008 (Springfield, Missouri)

Kicking off a 30-city tour this last March, Skillet — along with Thousand Foot Krutch and Decyfer Down — is one of the hottest shows you’ll find this year. While Skillet’s latest album Comatose was released back in 2006, it remains a chart topper and as fresh as ever. Factor in a strong dose of Thousand Foot Krutch and Decyfer Down, and you’re practically guaranteed to have your ears ringing for at least a week. “Huh? Whaddya say?”

I wasn’t all that familiar with Decyfer Down prior to the concert, but there is no doubt they fit the profile of an opening act who is going places. In fact, it is hard to believe these guys started out (back in 1999) as an acoustic act, albeit with a different name. It didn’t seem like they were on stage long, but major props goes out to any opening band that can go from zero to 60 as fast as they can. Hearing loss: 25 percent.

When Thousand Foot Krutch took the stage, the energy level hit the roof. Frontman Trevor definitely knows how to work a crowd. I would hate to eat my words, but I think these guys could trade places with Skillet as the headliner — they are that good. Not only did they bring their A-game musically, but Trevor oozes charisma that takes TFK from great to “wow, dude.” Hearing loss: 40 percent.

Sensing their mere humanity, Skillet temporarily brought things down a notch. They kicked off their set with a lone spotlight focused on guy sawing away on a cello playing the opening riff to “Comatose.” Nice. Cue the lights, max the amps, and out come Jon, Korey, Ben and Jennifer (their new drummer) blasting the audience back 10 feet. Charisma need not apply — the stage wouldn’t have room. Skillet clearly excels at blending several genres of rock into one incredible wave of sound. Don’t miss Korey on the keyboard and bass guitar, while still somehow moshing more than others. Hearing loss: Huh? Who?

This tour is definitely worth the price of admission. Don’t miss them in a city near you.

Grade: A

Artist of the Year nominee Skillet’s explosive 2006 Lava/Atlantic/Ardent/INO Records GRAMMY-nominated release, Comatose follows 2004’s Collide, which launched the group into the public eye and garnered the band their first prestigious Grammy nomination. A critical fave, Comatose has become their best-selling project to date, doubling the sales of Collide in half the time. In follow up to packed out headline club shows, a tour with FlyLeaf, and summer festivals Skillet spent last fall opening for mainstream rockers Breaking Benjamin and Three Days Grace. In the process of becoming one of the hardest working, most rocking, and broadly appealing acts of its generation, radio welcomed Comatose with open arms, as the first single, “Rebirthing” spent seven-weeks at No.1 on Christian Rock. Their second single, “The Last Night,” also took the top spot, this time at both Rock and CHR (CRW/R&R), while their latest singles, “The Older I Get” (CHR/Rock) and “Comatose,” which received a 2008 GMA Dove Award for “Rock Song of the Year,” have become their third and fourth consecutive No. 1 singles. At the end of 2007 the band was lauded with R&R’s No. 1 Christian CHR Song of the Year for “The Last Night”, which was also R&R’s No. 2 Christian Rock song of the year. In addition, Skillet was named 2007s No. 2 top artist on both the CHR and ROCK year end lists.
